Climb Paradise’s Butterfly Mountain at Sri Lanka’s Sacred Summit Adam’s Peak by Pushpitha Wijesinghe
Towering over the surrounding landscape a mere 16km from Ratnapura lies Sri Lanka’s most famous summit known by a multitude of names by an even more diverse multitude of faiths. Popularly known as Adam’s Peak this resplendent conical shaped mountain also called Samanalakanda (Butterfly Mountain) and Sri Pada (Holy Foot) is one of the country’s most visited tourist attractions due to its religious and cultural significance.
Located at a cloud grazing height of 7,360 feet above sea level this sacred summit frequented by Christians, Buddhist, Muslims , avid hikers and history buffs alike served as a point of reference for sea faring merchants from the Arab world, Greece and Persia in ancient times. Earning itself a place in the Arabian Nights and other ancient publications by Robert Knox, Marco Polo and Ibn Batuta Adam’s Peak is so named as it was believed by the Portuguese and Christian historians to have been the venue to which Adam fell after banishment from The Garden of Eden to serve his penance. Adam supposedly spent a thousand years standing on one foot at the peak’s summit for consuming the forbidden fruit. The arduous ordeal is believed to be responsible for the giant footprint at the mountain top which is simultaneously worshipped by Buddhists as the footprint of Lord Buddha (as mentioned in the Mahavamsa) and Hindus who claim the giant imprint to be that of Lord Shiva’s.
The foot mark measures 31 inches in width and 68 inches in length and is contained within a small plateau on top of the summit in an area of around 164 square miles. The plateau itself offers stunning and panoramic views of the landscapes below and watching the sunrise from atop Adam’s Peak is a special privilege enjoyed by seasoned visitors to the holy peak. There is also a massive brass lamp and a bell that climbers chime to denote the number of times they have reached the sacred peak.
There are two known paths to the peak of the mountain and both are flanked with scenic beauty and natural splendour. The Seethagangula tributary of the Kalu Ganga is one such highlight where climbers rest and bathe before embarking on the momentous journey to the top.
